Meet Helen
International Paralympic Female Basketball Player
Helen started Wheelchair Basketball at age 12, joining the London Titans junior team in Stanmore.
Six years later she became the youngest athlete to be selected for the GB Wheelchair Basketball team at the Beijing 2008 Games.
After the Paralymics she gained an athletic scholarship to study at the University of Illinois and graduated with a degree in Kinesiology and a Masters' degree in Business administration.
She has since gone on to play on professional teams in Spain, Germany and France.

Helen Freeman
Eight-time European medallist
Now, a six-time European bronze medallist and two-time silver medalist, the 4.0 player has thrice assisted the GB Women to their highest ever placing at the World Championships: earning the sixth spot in 2010 (Birmingham, UK) before building to an historical fifth place at the 2014 Championships in Canada and more recently securing the silver medal at the 2018 World Championships.
It has been great to see the gradual progression of women's wheelchair basketball in the UK in recent years.
I didn't realise the magnitude of it all, because I was so young, I just thought, I'm gonna go for it! It was a massive honour as not many people get to go at such a young age.

Starting an
Academy for Young Players
Helen's journey to becoming a professional basketball player wasn't easy. The cost of facilities and equipment made the early days difficult.
She was lucky to have mentoring and support that made it possible, and so she will be provide this to the next generation through the academy.
